Extreme Heat Warning begins Friday morning

NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard has an Extreme Heat Warning in effect from 10 AM Friday, July 31 until 8 PM PDT Sunday, August 2, covering the Western San Fernando Valley (zone CAZ372) along with the Eastern San Fernando Valley, Calabasas and Agoura Hills, the Santa Monica Mountains recreational areas, the Santa Susana Mountains, Santa Clarita Valley and other Southern California zones. The alert was issued July 28 at 9:57 AM PDT. The National Weather Service describes "dangerously hot conditions with temperatures of 95 to 110 expected" and notes that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. The agency adds that heat hazards may extend into next week for portions of the region. NWS guidance in the alert: drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors; do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles; limit strenuous activity to early morning or evening; and, for outdoor work, OSHA recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. The NWS states that heat stroke is an emergency and to call 911, and that residents without air conditioning or shelter can call 2-1-1 for help locating a cooling location.
