Extreme Heat Warning in effect through Sunday evening
NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard has an Extreme Heat Warning in effect for the Western San Fernando Valley (zone CAZ372), which includes Woodland Hills, Canoga Park, West Hills and Chatsworth. The warning was issued July 31 at 9:01 p.m. PDT and remains in effect until 8 p.m. PDT Sunday, August 2. The NWS describes "dangerously hot conditions with temperatures of 95 to 110 expected" and notes that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. The alert also covers Calabasas and Agoura Hills, the Santa Susana Mountains, the Santa Monica Mountains recreational areas, the Eastern San Fernando Valley and the Santa Clarita Valley. NWS guidance in the alert: drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors; do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles; limit strenuous activity to early morning or evening. The agency notes that anyone without air conditioning or shelter can call 2-1-1 for help locating a cooling location, and that heat hazards may extend into next week for portions of the region.

Ozone Air Quality Alert also runs through 8 p.m. Sunday
The South Coast AQMD has issued an Air Quality Alert for harmful levels of ozone (smog) pollution, relayed by NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard on July 30 at 4:02 p.m. and running until 8 p.m. Sunday. The alert covers the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, San Gabriel Valley and other inland areas. Per the alert, the highest ozone levels typically occur in the afternoon and early-evening hours, and levels can vary by time and location. Ozone pollution can cause trouble breathing, asthma attacks and lung damage; people with lung disease, older adults, people who are pregnant, children and those who spend a lot of time outdoors are identified as being at greater risk. AQMD's listed steps include checking current AQI before outdoor activity, keeping windows and doors closed, running air conditioning or an air purifier, and delaying gasoline-powered lawn equipment use, gas station trips and household chemical use until evening.

Caltrans: no listed lane closures inside the West Valley
