Extreme Heat Warning in effect until 8 p.m.
NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard has an Extreme Heat Warning in effect for the Western San Fernando Valley (zone CAZ372) until 8 p.m. PDT today, August 2. The warning, updated at 1:38 a.m., describes high temperatures between 95 and 105 degrees, with localized readings of 105 to 110 in the hottest locations, and warm overnight conditions bringing less relief than usual. The alert covers most valleys and mountains of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, including Calabasas and Agoura Hills, the Santa Monica Mountains recreation areas and the Santa Susana Mountains. NWS states there is a high risk for heat illness, particularly for the very young, the very old, people without air conditioning and those active outdoors, and advises drinking fluids, staying in air-conditioned spaces, checking on relatives and neighbors, not leaving children or pets in unattended vehicles, and limiting strenuous activity to early morning or evening hours. The office notes heat hazards may extend into next week for portions of the region.

Air quality alert for ozone through this evening
An Air Quality Alert issued by NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard on behalf of the South Coast AQMD remains in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday for harmful levels of ozone pollution. The alert area includes the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, San Gabriel Valley and other inland areas. AQMD notes the highest ozone levels typically occur in the afternoon and early-evening hours and that ozone can cause breathing problems, asthma attacks and lung damage, with greater risk for people with lung disease, older adults, people who are pregnant, children and those spending extended time outdoors. Recommended steps include checking current AQI levels, limiting extended outdoor activity when readings reach the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range or higher, keeping windows and doors closed, running air conditioning or an air purifier, and delaying use of gasoline-powered lawn equipment until evening.
